What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a collective term for symptoms of pain that run from the back down to the legs. Basically, the pain itself is transmitted by the sciatic nerve, hence the name. Because the nerve is the widest and longest in the body, it may transmit more than simply pain. You may feel sensations that include spasms, tingling, numbness, weakness, stabbing, or burning.
In effect, sciatica is not a specific condition, but rather a description of a specific set of symptoms. This means that there may be several causes to sciatica. The pain may come from an injury, inflammation, or pressure on the sciatica nerve at any given point. Finding the cause is paramount in terms of what treatment shall be used.
This begins with a description of the symptoms followed by x-ray or an MRI depending on what is available. A review of the results will usually point to the proper location. It may be a herniated disc in the back, stenosis of the spine, or even spondylolisthesis. This means that the cause may be temporary and will fade over time or more permanent in nature which requires treatment to correct.
